Castles of Périgord

There are 1001 castles in Dordogne , and there is something for everyone.

From medieval castles to Renaissance castles , all periods are represented here. The selection we have made for you is necessarily subjective, and therefore incomplete. But it is the result of our personal visits, as well as the numerous comments from guests of our boutique hotel and apartments.

You will find these choices in the "suggested routes", in the form of images below.

Château des Bories , located 300 meters from Mas des Bories, this massive castle can be visited in July and August, in the afternoons.

Château de Hautefort ( click here ) one of the most beautiful castles in Périgord.

Castelnaud-la-Chapelle Castle, ( click here ) one of the most beautiful restorations of a medieval castle in Périgord, with an extraordinary view over the Dordogne valley.

Commarque Castle , a complex 12th and 14th century construction in Dordogne.

Château d'Excideuil , ( click here ) 20 minutes from Mas des Bories.

The castles of Monbazillac, Beynac, Milandes, Bourdeilles and Jumilhac le Grand complete this selection.

Saint Jean de Côle and Saint Léon sur Vézère are among our favorites for their charm and the tranquility they exude.

Prehistory:

The Périgord region is one of the world's known cradles of prehistory.

Among the best-known sites are:

Lascaux ( https://www.lascaux.fr/fr )

Les Eyzies ( https://musee-prehistoire-eyzies.fr/ ) National Museum of Prehistory

The caves:

When it comes to caves, how can we not mention the most famous of them all, the Lascaux Cave ( https://www.lascaux.fr/fr ). World-renowned for its cave paintings.

In a different vein, the caves of Villars ( https://grotte-villars.com/ ) and Tourtoirac (https://www.grotte-de-tourtoirac.fr/ ) are located near other sites we have mentioned, and don't forget, especially in summer, that the temperature there is always around 15° Celsius.

Finally, the Gouffre de Proumeyssac ( https://www.gouffre-proumeyssac.com/ ), or the Crystal Cathedral and its impressive dimensions.

The Gardens of Périgord:

There are many of them, each more charming than the last. But our votes go to two of them.

These are the gardens of the Manoir d'Eyrignac ( https://www.eyrignac.com/fr ), one of which has been owned by the same family for 5 centuries, and whose garden came from the mind of the penultimate master of the place.

The other is the Hanging Gardens of Marqueyssac ( https://www.marqueyssac.com/ ). It is the most visited garden in the Dordogne. In addition to its centuries-old boxwood trees, it offers an exceptional view of the entire valley.
